ABSTRACT

There is an entirely different attitude to privacy among young people than there was perhaps a generation ago. There is much speculation and public debate about young people’s attitudes and beliefs toward digital media. Research findings are similarly divided, particularly with regard to attitudes toward online privacy. Dispositif emerged in Foucault’s later writings and interviews after he acknowledged the methodological impasse of an exclusively discursive focus. Discourse alone could not account for the recursive and relational ways power was nuanced across various elements of society. Due to differences and difficulties in translation, dispositif has become a notoriously illusive Foucaultian concept. Several young people also believed their ‘generation’ was more inclined to experiment and adapt to digital technologies due to greater confidence. In both images the young people represent the digital as kind of abstracted strata, connecting and permeating different aspects of their lives.
