ABSTRACT

The activities which follow have been chosen for their learning potential in the modern language classroom. This chapter discusses the purpose of each activity, how teachers might squeeze as much learning as possible out of each and some key planning decisions upon which that learning is contingent. Planning is an inherently messy, iterative process and tends to involve a lot of refining along the way. The backup plan relates to contingency planning or what teachers will do if things do not go to plan. An important aspect of planning is to create opportunities for learners to use familiar language, vocabulary and structures, for new purposes and in different contexts. The secret to planning a successful guessing game is to start with language that pupils are already familiar with. Pupils either in teams or individually attempt to get a line of noughts or crosses by saying a number and matching language.
