ABSTRACT

This chapter provides accounts of the researcher’s experiences in four schools in Cyprus. These schools were given the names of Kappa, Delta, Zeta and Omega. These case studies were compiled using a variety of data collection methods, such as observations, interviews, diary-keeping and analysing documents. Delta school had a very good reputation concerning the behaviour and learning of children. The school was situated in a high-status neighbourhood, in terms of the socio-economic and educational background of the people living there. Omega school was situated in a rich neighbourhood in the city. Students attending it were principally Greek-Cypriots. The school had a good name because of its high academic achievement and high levels of discipline amongst students. Schools had no control over decisions about staff allocations, rules, and the curriculum or reading materials. Head teachers and teachers were appointed to schools by the Educational Service Commission.
