ABSTRACT

Students can often have analytical ideas about literature that are highly sophisticated, yet they lack the vocabulary to accurately express them. By giving students the specific terminology they need to examine these ideas, they become confident enough to spot patterns in the texts they are studying and identify the grammatical features. Even from the start of Key Stage 3, many students are ready to tackle complex literary terminology, embrace the challenge of recognising these terms when they are put into practice in texts, and then consider the significance of the choices made and their frequency. By Key Stage 4, the ability to use complex vocabulary gives a polish and sophistication to students’ writing that will lift their confidence as they approach public examinations, and all Key Stage 5 students will find their understanding of the terms are fully embedded as they embark on A-Level work.
