Introduction: because there is language there is poetry

Children as young as two or three can delight in this rhyme and will try to get their own tongues round it. Why is this? Simply it is because they delight in the noise it makes. Just at the time they are sorting words from their whole acoustic world and beginning to use them themselves, here is a piece of language they can understand and whose sounds give them immediate pleasure.
