ABSTRACT

WHAT IS METACOGNITION? Based on Flavell’s initial conception of metamemory, Brown (1978, 1987) and Flavell (1976, 1979, 1987) contributed most to a theory of metacognition. Although the original research focused on helping children become more aware of the learning strategies they use while studying, metacognition has become an umbrella term for metamemory, metacomprehension, self-monitoring, metacognitive monitoring, selfdirected learning, and self-regulated learning.
