ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we explored issues relating to perceived self-efficacy and the varying impacts that participation in the various programmes appeared to have. Perceived self-efficacy relates to an individual's perception of her or his ability to achieve a task or to solve a problem and is usually based in practical experiences. However, self-esteem relates to an individual's assessment of her or his own self-worth, which may or may not relate to actual capabilities. In fact, research indicates that there may be little relationship between self-esteem and objectively measured abilities (Baumeister et al., 2003) — an issue to which we will return.
