ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the central topic of this book—how is U.S. Latinx identity being formed in the digital age? The issues of organizing a Latinx electorate were exemplified by the developments of the 2016 and 2018 elections. For example, the challenge of mobilizing Puerto Rican voters around the anti-Mexican immigrant rhetoric of Donald Trump. This section discusses the main subjects of this research—Latinx organizations focused on voter mobilization, digital media such as social media campaigns and email outreach created by those organizations, and the mainstream media reaction to Latinx voting results after the 2018 midterms. It also discusses the qualitative methodology used throughout the book, which includes participant observation, expert interviews, and content analysis of digital media and news items.
