ABSTRACT

This chapter debunks myths about gaming, share the pros and cons, and provide families suggestions and ideas for gaming. In South Korea, more than 90% of adolescents play video games. The chapter discusses issues with gaming, but it's important to keep in mind that just as every child is unique, every game is unique. The "something" in the chapter is the mechanics of gaming, microtransactions and loot boxes, violence, gaming culture, and effects on physical health. With the cost and competitiveness in the gaming industry, the people should not expect microtransactions and loot boxes to go away. Some trolls, particularly in old-school gaming culture, see trolling as an art. The chapter talks about some of the negatives of gaming culture, but there are many positives. Gaming can also provide a different type of education, one of soft skill. Rules are direct and clear cut, and can bring comfort to parents navigating technology.
