ABSTRACT

Consumer services pertain to those services a person can partake in for the sake of enjoyment, such as restaurants, movies, and bakeries. In response to concerns about racism, sexism, and homophobia in institutional and commercial contexts, diversity and multicultural training has been implemented with the assertion that they are meant to reduce further injustices against this marginalized other. Diversity and inclusion training has been a part of workplace policy and procedure in a variety of settings for some time. However, a news story went viral that launched such training into the headlines, allowing for public debate and speculation about what this type of training claims to do. The training day, according to their website, employs the use of tool kits, drafted by experts, for employees to use in self-guided groups, followed by a film directed by Stanley Nelson depicting African American history and experience.
