ABSTRACT

Deficit thinking in Latin America is the subject of this chapter. Four countries are covered: Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Peru. For each country, an ethnic demographic profile is provided, and in some cases, a brief discussion on conquest and colonization. Examples of deficit thinking themes covered are: (a) differential pedagogies; (b) teachers (Brazil); (c) teachers; (d) marginalization and academic achievement (Costa Rica); (e) funds of knowledge as counternarratives to deficit thinking; (f) gender inequality (Mexico); (g) parents; (h) issues facing Quechua speakers (Peru).
