ABSTRACT

Personality makes each person unique. Humor researchers working from the personality psychology perspective grapple with definitions of humor and what it means to have a sense of humor. This chapter covers personality traits and humor styles that help explain variance in humor appreciation, including liking sick humor. These traits and styles reveal patterns in humor preferences and function; for example, extroverts typically report a stronger sense of humor and willingness to risk telling jokes in group settings. Correlational research with validated scales and inventories, such as the Humor Styles Questionnaire and Coping Humor Questionnaire, measure and describe individual differences in humor appreciation and production.
