ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book attempts to provide some clarity and confidence in both understanding and managing individuals who are impulsive, inattentive and often hyperactive within the school setting. It provides practical guidance and off-the-shelf material for delivering continuing professional development to staff, ensuring a better understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and associated behaviours and the impact they have on children and their families. The book offers practical tips on achievable, proven approaches and models of good practice in the classroom and beyond, including interventions and ways of using support staff. It explains the new National Institute for Clinical Excellence guidelines and legal requirements for the administration of medication for ADHD which need to know about. The book encapsulates all relevant issues raised by teaching pupils with ADHD in an upto-date, well-informed and accessible way.
