ABSTRACT

Fluency strategies are along a continuum and as students learn them, they need to practice the next steps. Fluency is a multi-dimensional concept. The teacher assesses the student with a Math Running Record or a Fluency Probe. Math Running Records is a way to assess all of the aspects of fluency and then provide the information for what should be done next. Levelling workstations addresses the idea that meaningful practice should be individualized. The teacher uses the data to decide which level of workstation to place the student. Levelled Math Workstations give students the opportunity to engage in meaningful practice at their instructional level. When students are working in their zone of proximal development, then they are not bored or frustrated. They can actually build a solid foundation of understanding. This specifically looks like some students working on making ten facts and other students working on making doubles.
