ABSTRACT

Chapter 3: Intra-personal and inter-personal communication explores the link between executive functioning and language. Communication in the format of verbal language or non-verbal means is integral to provide internal scaffolding of information. Positioning of information for use is significant to actualisation and executive functioning. Sorting our knowledge of the world affects its application in response to our needs and others. Our reciprocal interactions with others are dependent on this internal foundation.

Common ground is established between academics, practitioners and parents despite the use of different terminology. The phenomenon of private speech, as termed in research, is discussed alongside the use of current practical strategies of tracking, descriptive praise and finally self-affirmation as applied within services and parenting programmes in the home environment. The context of this chapter includes examples from the pre-verbal developmental stage of childhood, in addition to children who have additional support for learning needs.
