ABSTRACT

The introduction provides statistics that demonstrate the pervasiveness of grief and bereavement in young children. Large numbers of kids experience the death of a close family member, including parents, siblings, grandparents, and pets, every year. The effects of grief vary, but they frequently extend into the school environment. Occasionally, a death involves a member of the school community itself, contributing to an atmosphere of bereavement throughout a classroom. Whenever a child is dealing with loss, he or she needs a strong support system. School personnel have direct contact with these children and are in a unique position to help. However, many staff members are unprepared and lack the proper knowledge and skills in this area. This section articulates the rationale for requiring staff to understand grief and bereavement in children.
