ABSTRACT

Resilience refers to our ability to survive a challenging circumstance by making the required adjustments. While we may physically survive the loss of a loved one, rebounding psychologically, emotionally, and socially is a bit more challenging. This chapter discusses what is meant by terms such as grief recovery and healing, as well as describing paths this journey may take. Recognizing that grief, just like love, is not something to be overcome but to which we adapt. Grief is painful and avoiding the experience is unhealthy and typically futile. Instead, we can actively learn from our losses. We can acquire coping skills and confidence in our ability to overcome hardships. We can develop a greater sense of empathy and concern for others. We can participate in activities to keep memories alive. And we can find meaning in our suffering, using our experiences to grow. We are unable to avoid loss and grief, but we can learn to be resilient, meeting life’s challenges fully and positively.
