ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the wide variety of Friedrich Frobel interpretations that shaped not only the thinking about but also the practice of kindergarten in Germany. One reason for the wide variety of writings on Frobel’s kindergarten pedagogy was the aim to make it more accessible. Marenholtz-Bulow justified her pedagogy, but at the same time also Frobel’s thinking, culture-historically—an idea that was to some degree expressed in Frobel’s letter to her. Marenholtz-Bulow furthermore developed two significant modifications that shaped the future justification of and thinking about kindergarten pedagogy: the typology of the children’s drives and the culture-historical kindergarten justification. The connection between the areas of activity in kindergarten and the drives is obvious. Both concepts, the typology of the children’s drives and the culture-historical justification of kindergarten, were highly influential and can be traced in the work of various Frobelianer. As kindergarten was one of the few appropriate professions for women, Morgenstern became more involved.
