ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we review key concepts that informed our thinking, data analysis, and writing of this text. Given that the power-conscious framework was the methodological grounding for the study, the following concepts served as the lens through which we approach this book: distinguishing activism and resistance, emotional trauma and labor, institutional betrayal, neoliberalism in higher education, and the role of educators in concert with identity-based student activism. These concepts, taken together with the contexts outlined in Chapter 2, offer important insights and framing that enrich the participant narratives in the remainder of the book.
