ABSTRACT
Education is very important: every additional year of education increases the propensity to involvement, as Peter Hall argues, so the growing number of women in higher education augurs well for the future. A distinction that still perniciously blights English education, from school through to much of higher education, separating ‘academic’ from ‘vocational’ learning to the detriment of both. True education for citizenship in a State is education for the effectuation of Society. Where communities have responded positively to this idea – such as volunteers cooperating to keep public libraries open – it is a product of local commitment, in spite of the State, not because of it. The State built law on the foundations of customary law, but then interwove it with the new State laws, so that the whole system seemed to be a product of the State. Many anarchists treat the State and government as essentially synonymous; anarchy is then defined by the wish to abolish State-and-government.
