ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, we consider the realities of “grammar in context” in the English Language Arts classroom. Since the connections between word, paragraph/passage, and sentence-level grammatical decisions are vital to the development of meaning, we organize this chapter into three sections:

Text-based grammar in context: What can common classroom texts offer on a grammatical level? How should we approach such discussions with students?

Writer-based grammar in context: The texts that students produce can likewise serve as the basis for applied instruction and practice.

How to support students’ inquiry into real-world texts, from Netflix show summaries to signs, grammar in context surrounds our students’ lives.
