ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the process of pilot-testing a new reading program. The audit is complete, recommendations were made, and the pilot begins. Conducting a pilot test is an important step, as it gives school administrators the opportunity to roll out a small-scale implementation of new materials while gathering important data about the positives and negatives of the program. Before the pilot can begin, the facilitator of the literacy evaluation will need to prepare for the pilot. If school administrators are pilot-testing more than one program, make sure that each program is tested by more than one teacher so a fair recommendation can be provided. Building reading specialists or literacy coaches: They will help plan the rollout, observe lessons, and reflect weekly with teachers on the program piloted.
