ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of literacy elements that are necessary for all K–12 classrooms. Research, instructional practices, and aligned assessments are also provided. Independent reading is derived from correlational research that suggests reading volume, or the amount children read, has a positive effect on reading achievement. Specific research has demonstrated that independent and wide reading promotes fluency, develops vocabulary acquisition, and supports knowledge building, which is key to reading comprehension. Rewards or prizes are often attached to completing the reading log. However, there is no research to suggest that the use of reading logs improves reading volume. Indeed, some research has suggested just the opposite: The use of mandatory reading logs reduces motivation and promotes a negative attitude towards independent reading.
