ABSTRACT

This chapter goes into more detail about what kinds of things one will likely have to write about in the narrative, and how one might go about structuring this narrative to make it easier for the reader to find what they are looking for. The introduction plays a crucial role in the thesis as the part of the narrative that sets the stage for the purpose and contribution of one's work. In some institutional contexts, the key purpose of the narrative is to provide a literature review to demonstrate how well one understands the field to which one is contributing, and thus the separate literature review chapter will end up comprising the bulk of the narrative. In the two-part model, the key findings across the papers are extracted from the publications and described in new text in the narrative. In the sandwich model, each publication is inserted as an integrated chapter in the thesis.
