ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book seeks to address some of the particular pedagogical and curricular challenges and opportunities facing religious education (RE). It provides teachers with a blueprint for creating a metacognitive environment and learning experiences that can be adapted for use across curriculum areas, whilst maintaining a common thread between them. The book focuses on the resources zone within the context of the RE-flect ‘Lesson Planning Framework’, showing how the project’s approach to teaching and learning addresses key issues relating to current practice in RE. It discusses how participating teachers were encouraged to develop their own metacognition through reflection on their own experiences of RE and how this has impacted on their professional practice. The book summarises the strengths and challenges of the approach and how it might be implemented in any RE classroom.
