ABSTRACT

The Song of Five Relationships (오륜가/五倫歌), by Shinjae Chu Sebung (1495–1554), teaches the five traditional values that make up the basis of Confucian moral standards. These are listed below, in the order they are presented in the poem: 부자유친 (pujayuch’in 父子有親) means Father and son have an intimate relationship. This refers to the duty of the child to the parents, springing from respect, debt, and gratitude for birthing and raising him or her. 군신유의 (kunshinyuŭi 君臣有義) means Master and servant have order. This refers to the unbreakable hierarchical structure between servant and master, subject and ruler. 부부유별 (pubuyubyŏl 夫婦有別) means Husband and wife are different. This refers to the complementary duties of a husband and a wife, but also implies a hierarchy within the married relationship, where a wife is expected to serve the husband. 형제우애 (hyŏngje’u’ae 兄弟友愛) means Love and affection of siblings. This refers to the respect and affection which should be present between brothers. 장유유서 (changyuyusŏ 長幼有序) means Old and young have order. This refers to the hierarchy between the young and old.
