ABSTRACT

In a British Council publication, Chia Suan Chong listed ten trends and innovations in English language teaching. She identified four technology-based trends: blended learning, mobile learning, gamification, and learning management systems. This chapter discusses how both the new trends can be utilized in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages. It focuses on providing English language teachers with knowledge and tools that will help them evaluate when and how to integrate technology into their instruction, with the goal of improving learner outcomes. Educators and others have researched and written about the Digital Divide, that is, the difference in opportunities for those with access to digital technology and those without. There are essentially two types of tools for such skill building. The first is teacher-initiated activities, using the applications that exist on most devices. The second is using programs that are designed by others and that are available either for purchase or for free in the Web.
