162In this chapter: Translation is traditionally thought of as interlingual transfer, of the meanings of words from a source language to a target language; but there is also such a thing as multimedia translation, including audiovisual transla tion (AVT).
Intuitive leaps: as in interlingual translation, the important things to be translated in multimedia translation often lurk just below the surface, and it is important to pay close attention to what’s being “said” with sounds and images in order to get a sense of what’s being not said but implied.
Pattern-building: because the channels or modes through which images and sounds come to us are more numerous than a string of words on the page, build ing patterns into useful guides for transfer can be a more daunting prospect; but it can be done, and must be done.
Rules and theories: thinking about multimedia translation through accessibility studies (AS) opens the field up to important ethical questions of human dignity, well-being, and fairness.
