ABSTRACT

This chapter theorizes relationship between TESOL and the cult of speed in the age of neoliberal mobility. Specifically, it addresses the ways in which the cult of speed emerges, functions, is distributed, and takes the forms that are inevitable in the field of TESOL, with a special focus on the higher education context. I also show how, as higher education institutions are synchronized with the temporal rhythm of the market economy, constructs such as promise, fantasy, stolen enjoyment, fears, and risk have played out at the intersection of TESOL and the culture of speed in the contemporary higher education setting.
