ABSTRACT

The symbiotic relationship between speed and metropolitan cities has been extensively discussed by both classical and contemporary sociologists, as well as social theorists. Metropolitan cities as well as industrial cities are the growth engines of the economy and of innovation for business-friendly governments in this age of neoliberal mobility. However, the ways in which the acceleration of time pervades the interactions between universities, markets, industries, and business in metropolitan/industrial cities are still under-explored. Moreover, the ways in which TESOL teachers working in such cities are experiencing various aspects of acceleration in their teaching contexts remains unexamined. Through the presentation of two case examples, this chapter examines the intersections between an industrial city, TESOL, and the acceleration of time against the background of neoliberal mobility.
