ABSTRACT

Through case studies and examples, this chapter explore the nexus between modern cities, TESOL, and the ethos of speed in this age of neoliberal mobility. Specifically, it examines the acceleration of academic work-life experienced by two male TESOL teachers working in two different cities in Ontario in Canada (Ottawa and Ontario). The findings reveal that both participants (Toni and David) devise different strategies to negotiate with and navigate through the acceleration of academic work-life created by their business-friendly universities. These universities are pseudonymously called Ontario A University and Ontario B University. Before unpacking these strategies further, the following section sketches out the academic status of these two teachers and presents their daily life experiences in Ontario, as well as the ways in which they navigate the ethos of speed in their teaching context.
