ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 outlines components of acoustic prominence and the different roles that stress, intonation, and focus play in communication. Correlates of prosody including duration, intensity, and fundamental frequency have been tied to communicative strategies such as attention-getting and discourse-leading through scholarly research studies, and these measurements are the main focus of analyses presented in this book. Finally, the chapter discusses linguistic and extralinguistic features behind the rich variability in speech prosody, focusing on biological factors influencing pitch register, the variable functions of intonation, and the communicative strength of pitch movement at phrase boundaries.
