ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the vocabulary of the modern English language, including multiword units such as idioms, proverbs, and collocations, is at the center of discussion. The perspective used looks at English vocabulary from various points of view. For one, the concept of word and the relationship between words and meaning are explored. Important information about dictionaries is provided; the structure and development of the English vocabulary are reviewed as are new words in the (social) media and the Internet, euphemisms, and nonsexist language. This includes dealing with vocabulary borrowing and word formation (shifts, blends, shortenings, composite forms). Observations are also made on how word meanings change.
