ABSTRACT

The STEM subjects – Science, Technology & Engineering, and Mathematics – are separate in most national curriculum documents around the world but with common links at a range of levels, and with at least a nod to relevance in the ‘real world’ and to vocational usefulness. The post-war period was one where the STEM subjects were indeed to the fore as the US economy boomed with consumption of new cars and domestic white goods raising the standard of living to a level that few had experienced before. Science often has a contribution to make to enhancing design & technology projects. In science there is a strong values dimension, especially in the design of experiments that affect living creatures or have an impact on the environment.
