ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the benefits of teaching design & technology in the light of Science, Technology & Engineering, and Mathematics and briefly discusses the importance of maintaining subject integrity. It provides examples of design & technology activities that build on the advice from Torben Steeg and Celia Hoyles and exemplify the utility-purpose approach developed by Janet Ainley and her colleagues with particular reference to pupil design decisions. The chapter presents the examples that cover the breadth of design & technology and indicate the benefits of teaching in the light of learning in science and mathematics. Celia Hoyles indicated that using mathematics could enhance the rigour with which sustainability issues were considered in the curriculum.
