ABSTRACT

201 Summary

The emergence of network societies has ushered in a new global communications sphere defined by mobile, instant messaging and social media. Accordingly, the notion of a public sphere defined by a nation-state has shifted to one increasingly built around social platforms and global communications. An effective public sphere enables citizens to have a voice, something social media and new technologies potentially facilitate, especially in marginalised communities. In this chapter we use a social media event to explore trends in social interaction and content creation and introduce strategies mojos might use to help their stories get heard above the online noise.
