ABSTRACT

The Conclusion pulls together the ideas and issues discussed in the volume and sums up the strengths and weaknesses of each of the three approaches to assessment of lexical command examined in the volume’s six chapters: indirect, discrete-point vocabulary tests, performance-based appraisal delivered by trained judges and performance-based evaluation generated by a variety of statistical metrics. It is maintained that each of these approaches taps into a different aspect of lexical knowledge and proficiency and only when applied together they give a truthful picture of the L2 learner’s lexical ability. The chapter also proposes a revised and extended model of lexical proficiency which includes the role of context, affect and cognitive strategies in the overall lexical ability.
