ABSTRACT

Managing challenging feelings can be difficult. They often bring waves of physical and emotional energy, unhelpful thoughts and general helplessness. There are many teachable ways to manage challenging feelings constructively and responsibly. Rational thoughts and impulse control tend to switch off in the heat of the moment. Knowing how to manage challenging feelings has many long-term benefits, including improved comfort and security, increased earning potential and greater socioeconomic status. People tend to seek out people who can keep their feelings in perspective most of the time and avoid those who transfer heavy emotional weight onto others or lose control over their emotions at the smallest of frustrations. People who have less control over their thoughts and feelings experience overwhelming anger more often, putting their physical and psychological health at risk. There are many daily practices that bring about positive feelings of happiness and hope.
