ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter is comprised of four sections. Section 1.1 introduces the objective of the present study, namely public discourse in the context of contemporary China, covering its definition, functions, and properties. Section 1.2 addresses the disciplinary orientations and characteristics of the study, while Section 1.3 briefly discusses its prospective significance. The final section presents the structure of the book.
