ABSTRACT

The skill of notetaking is prevalent and expected in many educational contexts. It is one of the hallmark abilities that can facilitate learning and success in higher education. The ability to take notes effectively and efficiently involves a number of cognitive and physical elements all cooperating under time pressure. When a person takes notes in their second language (L2), as in English for academic purposes (EAP) or English medium instruction (EMI) contexts, challenges abound. This chapter defines notetaking and explores these various elements to establish a common understanding of this skill, which is often taken for granted.
