ABSTRACT

The global expansion of English as a medium of communication over the recent decades has shown that varied terms have been applied to describe the phenomenon of language globalization. Although it might be assumed that these terms can be used interchangeably, there are key differences between them. This chapter gives an overview of the terminology of English as an international language (EIL) and English as a lingua franca (ELF) in today’s world, in which people from various linguacultural backgrounds come into contact with each other. Then, this chapter provides different definitions of communication strategies (CSs) and gives a historical overview indicating that the use of CSs has helped English L1–L2 speakers to overcome their language difficulties. In this chapter, I also put a strong emphasis on the investigation of the use of CSs in ELF settings.
