ABSTRACT

As discussed at length in Chapters One and Two, along with the rapid growth of globalization, speakers from different linguacultural backgrounds interact with each other using English for various communicative purposes. Subsequently, misunderstanding may occur when there are different linguistic and communicative competence among interlocutors involved in a conversation. In this chapter, we first look at the categories of communication strategies used in the data to facilitate effective communication in intercultural encounters. Then, we discuss the most frequently used strategies of achieving effective communication observed in the data. In the last section, we explore what subcategories of communication strategies successfully contribute to negotiating meaning in ELF interactions.
