ABSTRACT

As discussed in Chapter Five, ELF is an unprecedented phenomenon that happens between people from various linguacultural backgrounds and in different settings such as the institutional and the casual. After analysing ELF communication via descriptive and fine-grained qualitative analyses, I identified that ELF speakers use different types of self-initiated and other-initiated communication strategies to negotiate meaning and to avoid any potential misunderstanding or non-understanding. In this chapter, we first explore the communication strategies used by ELF speakers to achieve mutual understanding in their intercultural communication. Then, we discuss subcategories of self-initiated and other-initiated communication strategies used by the speakers in their ELF interactions.
