ABSTRACT

This chapter first gives an overview of the notions of intercultural communication, diversity and communication strategies awareness and metacultural competence. Then, it focuses on how ELF influences practices in language pedagogy and discusses that effective communication happens when ELF speakers resort to their multilingual repertoire. There are implications for ELF speakers who will then be able to manage their intercultural encounters effectively; for teachers who can encourage language learners to participate in conversations regardless of their linguacultural differences and linguistic abilities and for ELT material designers who will be able to rethink their priorities to match the actual needs of globalized context, to target their materials more closely to the needs of ELF speakers and to offer course materials that are more suitable for use in international contexts.
