ABSTRACT

Education reform in South Africa has undergone many changes in the past 25 years. In order for transformation of the education system, the African National Congress (ANC) was convinced that the curricula had to be freed from a legacy of racism, dogmatism and outmoded teaching practices. However, the difficulties in achieving the vision of the Department of Education were the inherent systemic problems, such as school financing. Against this background, the general aim of this book is to seek clarity and make recommendations on the issues of standard-setting, quality assurance and equating of examinations and assessment approaches and practices, in general, and at the exit level (Grade 12), in particular. Systems theory is used as an underlying conceptual framework.
