ABSTRACT

Educational quality and indeed the quality of examinations will continue to be an issue in the educational landscape. With the additional computing power and advances in terms of psychometrics, new insights and possibilities also open up for the design and development of examination systems. While it is not easy to change an examination system overnight, intentional planning and resources are required if changes are to be made. In this chapter, the pushes internationally for the development of 21st century skills are reflected upon from a South African perspective. It is vital, that while being locally relevant, that South Africa is also internationally competitive. The changes in technology and indeed the workplace necessitate careful thinking. It is also important that different data sources, qualitative and quantitative, are intentionally drawn upon. It is postulated that the use of mixed methods in post-hoc analyses would be invaluable for insights into the system.
