ABSTRACT

It is important to understand that standardised testing is not traditionally part of European pedagogy, but which was influenced by the sceptical and open-ended tradition of debate inherited from Ancient Greece. In recent years, there has been emphasis and reemphasis place on standards. This approach has been created by a single frame of reference reflecting a government-imposed agenda. The quality of the Senior Certificate/National Senior Certificate in South Africa is embodied in the quality of the assessment leading to the certificate, and it is the intention of the Department of Education and the Quality Assurance Council (Umalusi) to ensure public confidence in the value of the certificate at the end of Grade 12. In this chapter, the equating and assessments standards are discussed in detail.
