ABSTRACT

Managing examinations and assessment is an important function of the instructional leader, as the results could determine educational and life choices of candidates, while the reputations of schools may also be affected by performance, especially in high-stakes examinations at the exit level. Performance is generally reported in raw scores, which is simply a count or percentage of credits achieved on a test or examination. This is also the most common way to report on internal assessment opportunities and all learners and teachers are familiar with it. In this chapter, norm-referenced, criterion-referenced and standard-referenced tests are described. Issues related to the measurement of continuous assessment are highlighted and strategies for interpreting data are put forward.
