ABSTRACT

When the advances in item response theory (IRT) are considered then a number of possibilities become available for how assessments and examinations can take place. In standard setting, it is imperative that the items in and around the cut-scores are functionally optimally; that is, that the items can discriminate between testees above, at the borderline and below the cut-score. Adaptive testing is a test administration procedure that could possibly be used for better targeting of ability levels. Items are selected from an item bank in a way that maximises information obtained from examinees. In this chapter, computer adaptive testing is discussed. An introduction to computer adaptive testing is provided in addition to what the system requirements would be, how items are developed, what validity and reliability issues have to be considered and finally what some of the advantages and disadvantages would be when using computer adaptive testing.
