ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes that narrative can be analysed through the highlighting and capturing of critical events contained in stories of experience. It focuses on the use of critical events revealed within stories of experience as a framework for research methodology based on narrative inquiry. The chapter explains the use of critical events to address a number of problems faced by researchers wanting to use a more narrative-based approach, including the vast amount of data and sources a narrative inquiry may generate. It addresses the resulting problem of how to analyse this data without becoming so immersed in it that the critical events, those that shaped and impacted on human understanding, are not missed.
